Bucharest - A City of Disillusions And Contrasts

I only have one expression in my mind and that's "it won't leave anyone cold." However, that's exactly what Bucharest did to me. Nothing terrible happened to me during the trip, but I still couldn't enjoy the city the way I had wished. That's also why it is so difficult to write anything about this place!

One of my favourite alleys in Old Town

a piece of Paris in Bucharest - Pasajul Macca

The lovely neighbourhood of Lipscani

The centre of Bucharest holds in it massive communist-style buildings, graffiti, French balconies and the odd broken window, making it an interesting potpourri of styles. Bucharest's old town (which, by the way, isn't very old at all, but was artificially reconstructed) gave off central European vibes, so it doesn't surprise me that this city used to be called Little Paris!

Now that I'm going through the photos, Bucharest looks quite alluring. What went wrong then? Well, in this city of grey buildings, the time seemed to stop, the beat was lacking, people seemed to be sleeping. I swear! I went to Old Town at night time to go for a walk and take a couple of photos but there was no one around. No tourists, no locals.

A couple of tips

On my last day, there was some sort of a scam intent. I was walking on one of the main streets in broad daylight, alone with my camera, when some man stopped me speaking in Romanian. After explaining him in English that I didn't understand, he stepped in front of me and said: "passport, passport, police man". I didn't respond anything except for "no", went around him and continued my journey. So no actual harm was involved really.

Thinking back, I should've definitely done a walking tour on my first day. I think that way you could get into the city much better. Much to my disappointment, it was already too late on my last day, because the tours started at three o'clock and my aeroplane left in the afternoon.

Extreme poverty

Did you know that Bucharest has one of the worst slum areas in Europe, the Ferentari neighbourhood? I didn't even think about close to that area, but I think the topic is pretty intriguing in all its sorrow. Just to see exactly how all the aftermath that communism left behind show in the East... According to several articles, the flats in Ferentari used to be studios for workers, but now they serve as homes for several people and only one in every five flats has electricity running. Taxis won't go to this neighbourhood and neither have the most common supermarkets opened their doors in this ghetto. It is staggering in the sad sense of the word - we're talking about Europe here, not somewhere far. Expressen has an amazing reportage on the topic in Swedish or English that sheds light on the problem.

Tällaisen negatiivisen postauksen jälkeen ajattelin ensi kerralla kertoa teille parista paikasta, joissa taas kannattaa ehdottomasti käydä, kuten myös mun kokemukset ruuista!

After all this negativity, I'll promise to tell you about some places that are worth seeing, including a couple of hidden gems and my experience with the local food!

It was quite a disappointment for me to hear that I can't do my Erasmus exchange in France next year after planning it for such a long time.

Can you guess why?

Because I don't hold an official language certificate, because a note written by my French teacher won't do, and because the three courses I've done at university aren't enough, even if our starting level was supposed to be B2. You know, the funniest thing here is that the universities in France didn't even ask for any kind of certificate, they just recommended having a B1 or B2 in French. In other words, Spain couldn't send me to another country due to my French level that is possibly too low, when I'm actually registered in one of their universities with no Spanish certificate whatsoever. Luckily I can apply again in my fourth year - let's see, if I'm luckier then!

1. some flowers for the 21-year-old 2. ...and tapas for the guests! 3. in the metro with a portable speaker and a rather large group of friends, disculpen las molestias

So we celebrated my birthday with a nice little group, even though I was in Seville with a friend for the actual day. If you know me at all, you'll be aware that I love trying out new recipes and tinkering in the kitchen, so I decided to offer my friends a little tapas buffet. Right - those small pieces of baguette aren't exactly what you'd call an accomplishment but seemingly they did their job with filling my guests stomach!

1. We got some snow here in Madrid in February! 2. The weather was horrible but my friend was over so we went out anyway 3. Visiting my classmate and some aggressive ducks in her village

The projects ended abruptly, so I'm back to being jobless again for the time being.  edit. I was told today that there are more projects available now. I guess this is what it is; you have to enjoy your freedom when you don't have a job and appreciate it when you do have one. Although it hurts to use my student loan, I know that having more time will positively affect my school work, blog and reading time (at least that's what I hope). I'm just finishing Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi's book on Flow and it's been so inspiring that I can recommend it to each and every one of you who's interested in psychology or just happiness in general! Do you have any book recommendations, especially in Finnish? I realised they have quite a few books at the Finnish Institute here in Madrid. I just don't know where to start after having read Sofi Oksanen.

That's what's up in Madrid then! A bit a rain and uni projects in the forecast for the upcoming weeks. Crazy to think that exactly one year ago it was full sunshine and +25!

The 3 Castles Tour in Romania - How To See Them & What To Expect

DAY 3 IN ROMANIA Kolmas päivä Romaniassa ja kolme eri linnaa.

Third day in Romania and three different castles. It is tough to choose a favourite, when all of them have such a different style from the outside as well as from the inside, and not forgetting all the stories they hold in them. Let's check out each one of them!

THE PELES CASTLE

Ah, kuninkaallinen Pelesin linna.

Ah, the royal palace of Peles. This attraction is located in the little village of Sinaia, whose idyllic scenery we got to admire through our tour guide's car windows. Even the clouds did us a favour and moved away, when the sun took over the sky and the lovely weather welcomed us at the Peles Castle. What an amazing way to start this trip! And although the Beauty and the Beast got its inspiration from France, you could perfectly imagine Belle on these balconies, could you not?

THE BRAN CASTLE - DRACULA

The second stop, Dracula's Castle, was actually the one that served as an inspiration for this tour (and actually a bit for the whole trip, I guess) I'm a bit sad I didn't take any guided tour inside the castle, because it would have been nice to hear stories about Vlad the Impaler, since I rarely read any history books. This was an interesting place full of all sorts of legends. Just a little tip: in winter, the path you'll need to take to get up to the castle will be super slippery and it's not exactly short - about 200 metres. I don't know why they hadn't sanded the way properly, but they were trying to shovel the snow out of the way constantly.

THE RASNOV FORTRESS

The Rasnov Fortress was the last stop on this tour and although lunch was skipped this time, I was still oozing of energy for exploring it. This fortress is only an outdoor site so that's what makes it different from the two previous ones. The cable car takes you up in a matter of few minutes and apparently there is a bus or city train that runs weather permitting. If the fortress itself doesn't impress you that much, I promise you the amazing landscape will do. Snow-covered spruces, the mountain range peeking through the clouds, the houses of the village in regular rows and the snow-capped peaks... As someone who hates winter, I was so happy to travel here right in the middle of the coldest season of the year. Doesn't matter if my shoes are wet or if I get cold if I stop walking for a minute. It's just so beautiful there.

HOW TO GET TO THE CASTLES

Good news - all the castles can be reached fairly easily by public transport, by train to be more precise. I just want to remind you that they may not run very frequently and that you're most probably not able to buy the tickets online in advance.

HOW MUCH IT COSTS
Peles 7,5+35 LEU for photography (€9,20)
Bran 25 LEU (€5,35)
Rasnov 6 LEU (€1,30) + cable car 12 LEU (€2,60)

DAY TOUR - IS IT WORTH IT?

If you'd like to explore the castles more in depth, I'd say do them separately and get guided tours in each one. Then again, if you're short on time and want to go the easy way, having a private tour guide is definitely the best option! You always have the alternative to book a group tour, whose guides will tell you stories about the castles in the bus but might not accompany you to the castle itself. They are a good alternative as they are a bit more reasonably priced than a private tours. The Land of Dracula offer great group tours for around €35 and they take you to all three castles in one day (and you won't even be back late - for example, my tour lasted from 9 to 16). I guess I was lucky since my group tour turned out to be a private one, as I was the only one who had booked it.

Mihin linnaan te menisitte ekaksi?
Which castle would YOU visit first?
